Postcards
(Magazine Dezain No Gemba 2005 New Year's postcard, and four other items) (2004)
Client: UN (pronounced "yoon")
This is a direct-mail postcard for a live event organized by the music group UN, of which Takahashi was a member, and in charge of visuals.
When the postcard (a composite photograph) is placed next to the same card, but with the reverse side up, and the same process is repeated, they become one seamless image. They are designed to form an endless chain of images. If they are placed upright, like a byobu folding screen, they make a delightful decorative item. Takahashi asked various shops to display them that way.
The idea of using two sides of a postcard printed with paired pictures or patterns, combined with this "contrivance," can expand an artist's creativity three-dimensionally, leading one design to evolve into another, and so forth and so on. This concept was already in Takahashi's mind when she designed another postcard (the fifth sample in this section) a few years before making this one. It's one of the methods of creative expression Takahashi uses in her designs in a variety of ways.
