DIC Traditional Color Origami (Traditional Colors of Japan, Traditional Colors of China, and Traditional Colors of France) (2006)

Client: DIC Corporation

Ten designers took part in an exhibition organized by the DIC Gallery to design an item using three spot color sample guides published by DIC: Traditional Colors of Japan; Traditional Colors of China; and Traditional Colors of France. Given full freedom to design, Takahashi made three sets of origami sheets, each encompassing the colors of one of the sample guides.

These sets of "Origami Papers in the World's Traditional Colors," as Takahashi called them, were to cultivate sensibility and nurture richness of heart from a young age by contacting with the colors related to each one's native land (particularly the colors associated with one's own cultures and histories).

As a benefit for small children, the cover of the origami book is sturdy enough to serve as a small table on which to fold origami on their laps and have fun. Grown-ups can carry the book with them and create a chopstick rest at a restaurant, or make something on the spot as a gift. Because the name of the color is printed on the reverse side of the sheet, users can enjoy learning about traditional colors as well. The book also provides folding instructions on the last page. This was a proposal for a product that is fun, beautiful, and rewarding to have in your life.
